As the research and analysis division of The Economist Group, the EIU helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The EIU is the global standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over two hundred countries.

The Country Analysis division of the EIU is seeking to recruit a Research Analyst, Asia to be based in our office in Gurgaon, India. We are looking for someone with a good understanding of macroeconomics and strong writing skills. A proven interest in South Asia is desirable. The Research Analyst will produce economic and political forecasts for specific countries in South Asia and write analysis on economic, political and policy developments. They will join a team of analysts working on China and Asia and report to the Principal Economist, Asia.


How you will contribute:

Produce and contribute to high-quality forecasts and analysis:
  • Produce economic and political forecasts for selected countries in South Asia
  • Produce ongoing analysis and forecast updates on key events as they happen, with a focus on assessing their impact upon EIU forecasts and implications for clients
  • Build a network in academia, business and government to draw on for research purposes
  • Ensure all output meets EIU standards and produced according to editorial deadlines, as well as directed at the needs of clients

Manage external contributors:
  • Be responsible for finding and commissioning suitable external contributors to provide additional analysis of political and economic events within the countries of responsibility
  • Carry out a comprehensive edit on contributors’ input, checking accuracy, ensuring all the relevant information is presented in accordance with EIU style guide and product guidelines
  • Build a network of sources in academia, business and government to draw on for research purposes
Contribute to the regional team:
  • Play an active role in team discussions on regional themes and the development of the regional view on South Asia
  • Support other members of the team when they need it
Support promotion of views externally:
  • Support engagement with clients through participating in meetings and assisting with preparation of briefing material and analysis as required
  • Work collaboratively with EIU sales colleagues to support new business development
  • With appropriate training, share views with media bodies such as television, radio or newspapers on behalf of the EIU

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:

  • Knowledge and interest in South Asian economics and politics
  • Relevant degree in Economics, Political Science or related subject. Ideally a Masters degree (or equivalent)
  • Strong writing and editing skills, and an ability to write well under time pressure
  • Knowledge of analysing economic and policy trends, and comfort in working with datasets
  • Fluent written and oral communication skills in English (Fluency in relevant regional languages is a strong plus)
  • Strong knowledge in MS Office, especially Excel and Powerpoint; experience with data terminals and forecasting software is desirable
  • The ability to juggle different tasks effectively
  • A knack for placing clients first and maintaining a commercial focus
