Manager – Credit Risk, BBLMU Offshore Relationship Manager

The Offshore BB Loan Management Unit is an extension of the Onshore UK BBLMU team which is responsible for evaluating businesses in financial difficulties and help turn them around. This involves ensuring the highest level of service to our customers while continuing to focus on the financial aspects of the business and the Bank’s policies.

The Opportunity:
Business Banking LMU (BBLMU) takes responsibility for Problem and Defaulted Exposures that emanate from CMB Business Banking (BB) where the cash risk exceeds £30,000

BBLMU recognises the importance of having a highly skilled/engaged team with effective internal stakeholder relationships.

The prime responsibility of BBLMU relationship managers is to put the needs of customers at the heart of everything we do, and in doing so protect the Bank’s capital; recurring income stream; and reputation in how we deal with customers experiencing financial distress.

Where customers are experiencing financial or non-financial distress, support turnaround strategies by working with customers to support the changes necessary to restore business viability, subject to the Bank’s risk appetite.

RMs in the Advisory role do not have direct customer interaction. Instead, they provide specialist advice / guidance to frontline relationship managers across the UK region with a view to implementing successful turnaround strategies.

key Responsibilities

Manage a portfolio of distressed relationships on an Advisory / co-management basis

Complete objective assessments of our customers’ underlying viability, consider the sustainability of the business model and management ability. Achieve co-operation in addressing the Bank’s concerns and the problems facing the business. Alongside this, consider the Bank’s risk appetite (debt levels / facility structure / quality and adequacy of security)

Demonstrate a sympathetic and positive approach in identifying the symptoms/root cause of financial/non-financial difficulty so as to ensure all options are considered in order to develop appropriate turnaround strategies

Provide recommendations and support for all credit related requests received from frontline relationship managers


Academics — University degree in commerce / accountancy / business management

Candidates should have past experience in either of the following: relationship management (RM) roles catering to businesses / corporates, credit or financial analysis / approvals in commercial banking, business turnaround management

Fair levels of understanding about the UK economy / sectors and financial products available in the commercial banking space

Eye for conducting thorough review of financials / accounts given the complexities involved with distressed businesses, and at the same time be capable of coping with the ever-evolving market and regulations in the UK region.

Capacity to maintain strong constructive relationships with Team Leads, Frontline Relationship Managers and Credit approvers

Excellent communication skills

Ability to work as part of a team
