Job Introduction

BBC Monitoring (BBCM) provides news and information based on monitoring of open source media from over 150 countries in more than 100 languages and across all platforms. It is a centre of expertise and an important part of the BBC’s newsgathering operation with journalists based in the UK and international bureaux. Our extensive operation enables us to provide insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news. Our round-the-clock reporting of TV, radio, press, news agencies, digital and social media is also provided to commercial clients, partners, and the UK Government.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the creation of content for BBC Monitoring's output.

Main Responsibilities

Edit and proofread content provided by freelancers or staff

Generate ideas and stories for written products, including creative and clear treatments and proposals, ensuring consistency of content, quality and style

Carry out in-depth background/subject research as required, ensuring complete accuracy and critically evaluating the relevance and suitability of information

Coordinate with freelancers to ensure timely, high-quality contributions

Provide feedback to freelancers as required

Contribute towards planning of coverage as required

To work closely with other BBC colleagues as required

Mentor and/coach new or junior members into the team, acting as buddy and giving direction.

Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining high editorial standards.

At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.

Are you the right candidate?

Proven record of subbing English-language copy for factual accuracy and language quality

Experience of desk-based research, including the ability to identify key information, ideas, debates and issues within a field

Ability to work well within a team as well as on own initiative

Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people

Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC

Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities

Proven ability to locate relevant sources of information

The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances

An understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to journalism
