The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.
In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long-established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.
In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive.
UNICEF’s Child Protection Programme in India seeks to promote the protection of children from violence, exploitation & abuse and ensure their participation in key decision making processes. It supports the implementation of the Government of India’s Integrated Child Protection Scheme/Mission Vatsalya, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (2006), and other child welfare & protection schemes/ programmes to create a protective environment for children and adolescents. The CP Programme seeks to improve and expand services to children in need of care and protection and children in conflict with the law under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and related legislation with regard to child trafficking, child labour, child marriage and the sexual abuse of children. The programme also works towards empowerment of adolescents, building life and work skills and their healthy transition to higher education and productive work opportunities. CP programmes emphasize the prevention of abuse and exploitation of children, particularly the reduction of all forms of violence, child marriage through partnerships with education, health, communication for development, social protection and other sectors and departments. At the state level, UNICEF state offices work with state departments, CSOs, government officials and duty bearers, community members and children & adolescents to strengthen child protection services, build capacities of stakeholders and facilitate process of adolescent participation.
The duty station will be Delhi, India. New Delhi is the national capital of India and is situated in the central part of India. The city is home to thousands of businesses and international companies and embassies, making it very cosmopolitan in nature, and culturally rich.
Conditions of Service for national UN Volunteers
Contract is issued for one years at a time (renewable depending on mandate, availability of funding, operational necessacity and satisfactory performance.
Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. A monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of Rs. 42,473.67 (Rupees Forty Two Thousand Four Hundred Seventy Three and Paise Sixty Seven only) will be provided to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents), as well as final repatriation (if applicable) and resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.
Under the direct supervision of Chief of Child Protection, UNICEF India the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
Support Country Programme implementation
Under the supervision of the Chief of Child Protection, contribute to the implementation of the child protection work plan for the 2018-2022 country programme, with special focus on programme implementation, monitoring, assistance to states, documentation and research
- Contribute to knowledge management by updating the child protection section on the UNICEF India intranet, maintaining a database of child protection programmes and supporting child protection officers at State level through regular communication and information sharing
- Ensure accurate and timely dissemination of updates on on-going child protection initiatives within the Delhi office and among the states
- Contribute to regional and global bulletins as requested
- Work with communication advocacy and partnership staff in the selection and dissemination of information on child protection to national, international and local levels

- Ensure smooth coordination of Enterprise Content Management (UNICEF Intranet) portal of CP and manage the knowledge products efficiently.
- Timely maintaining and updating the site of ECM like adding tabs, creating the new pages etc
- Support the communication team as the focal point person for the CP team in updating the UNICEF public facing website.
Report and proposal writing
- Prepare programme and project status reports required for the section, Management, Government reviews, programme analysis, Annual Reports, etc.
- Contribute to the planning and review of the child protection annual work plan and of other strategic and programme documents
- Assist in drafting briefing notes, talking points, funding proposals, presentations and preparing donor reports. Contributing the monthly SITREPS of India Country office for the CP section.
Assist child protection thematic leads
- Provide support to CP thematic leads at the national level, in programme planning, implementation and monitoring
- Provide support as delegated by Supervisor
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
- Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
- Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
- Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
- Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
- A repository of information and resources on child protection issues and initiatives is readily available, accessible and updated
- Plan for documentation of child protection initiatives developed and regularly implemented
- State offices receive regular updates and information and programme database maintained.
- Collating monthly updates from state offices and submitting the final one for the global and regional bulletin.
- Support to all CP programme has been provided
- Funding proposals, concept notes, donor reports, programme reports and briefing notes prepared.
- A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

University degree in relevant social science disciplines, such as: child development, social development, international relations, social work, law (international law, humanitarian law), economics and social policy.
Research background and knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods, preferably with specialization in areas of child rights, child protection and social development.
At least two years of relevant professional work experience in programme implementation, monitoring and evaluation
Developing country work and/or field experience an asset
Good knowledge of child protection, human rights and gender.
Good analytical, negotiation and communication (verbal and written) skills.
Proficient computer skills (Word, Excel, Power point, database programs, etc.)
Good understanding of quantitative methods.
Familiarity with South Asia or other developing countries an asset
